Environment

Linux*

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Summary

Steps to follow when a storage device is not detected on a Intel® NUC kit.

Description
  • After installing a new SSD 2.5", the system doesn't boot.
  • Drive isn't recognized in Intel ® NUC boot options.
  • Error during startup: "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in Selected Boot Device"
Resolution

Check that there is an Operating System on the drive.

Drives without an operating system can't be used as boot devices.

Update BIOS

Verify the latest BIOS is installed. BIOS updates are available on Download Center.

Check the drive connection

For M.2 drives: Make sure the drive is fully inserted into the M.2 slot and the screw is secured to the stand-off.

For 2.5" drives: Make sure the drive is fully seated in the drive cage. Check that the drive cable is properly connected to the onboard SATA header.

Check if BIOS detects the drive

  1. Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Go to Advanced > Devices SATA (or Advanced > Storage.)
  3. See if the drive is detected and identified on the SATA Port or the M.2 Port.
  4. Press F10 to exit BIOS.

If it's not there after completing the above steps, the drive may be defective.

Check Boot Order in BIOS

  1. Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Go to Advanced > Boot > Boot Priority (or Boot > Boot Priority.)
  3. Set the drive with the operating system to be the first device in the Boot Order.
  4. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS.

If after following the previous steps, the storage devices still are not working, try using a different storage device. You can also contact Intel Customer Support for further assistance.
