Do Intel® NUCs support Single-Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) or Virtual Machine Device Queues (VMDq)?

Environment

OS Independent family

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Summary

Intel NUC BIOS and i2xx LAN controllers do not support SR-IOV or VMDq.

Description

PCI-SIG* SR-IOV and VMDq support cannot be found in the BIOS.

Is SR-IOV supported on Intel® NUCs?

Resolution

For SR-IOV or VMDq support, the BIOS, LAN Controller, Driver, and OS must all support those technologies. At this time the Intel® Aptio® V BIOS and i2xx LAN controllers do not support SR-IOV or VMDq.

Work around is to use the software network switch integrated into your hypervisor.

Additional information

To test for SR-IOV support, Open PowerShell, and run "get-netadaptersriov"

More information regarding the capabilities of each Intel® Ethernet controller can be found on ark.intel.com under Ethernet Products.

Refer to the SR-IOV FAQ for a list of Intel Ethernet Controllers that support SR-IOV.

Single-Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) involves natively (directly) sharing a single I/O resource between multiple virtual machines. SR-IOV provides a mechanism by which a Single Root Function (for example a single Ethernet Port) can appear to be multiple separate physical devices.

Virtual Machine Device Queues (VMDq) is a technology designed to offload some of the switching done in the VMM (Virtual Machine Monitor) to networking hardware specifically designed for this function. VMDq drastically reduces overhead associated with I/O switching in the VMM which greatly improves throughput and overall system performance.
