Why do I see hardware calibration or functional failures in my full-rate DDR or DDR2 SDRAM interface design on Stratix III and Stratix IV devices using Quartus II software version 9.0 SP2?

Description

The DDR and DDR2 SDRAM High Performance Controller MegaCore in Quartus® II software versions 9.0 SP2 and earlier have a problem that can cause hardware functional failures in full-rate designs on Stratix® III and Stratix IV devices. A problem exists in the voltage and temperature (VT) tracking circuit of the ALTMEMPHY megafunction sequencer block that can result in initial calibration failures or functional failures in user-initiated memory transactions. Full-rate memory interface designs in both the AFI and non-AFI mode are affected.

Patch 2.38 is available to fix this problem in the Quartus II software version 9.0 SP2. If you are using version 9.0 or 9.0 SP1, first download and install the Quartus II Software version 9.0 Service Pack 2. Download the appropriate Quartus II software version 9.0 SP2 patch 2.38 from the following links:

To fix the problem, regenerate and recompile all instances of the DDR and DDR2 SDRAM High Performance Controller MegaCore (or ALTMEMPHY megafunction) in your design using the updated Quartus II software.
